GRAS Update Proposal Coming This Spring, says FDA Food Chemical Safety Chief

Mark Hartman, the Food and Drug Administration’s director for food chemical safety, recently told the chemical industry when it can expect to see the agency’s proposed rule updating the generally recognized as safe (GRAS) system for new food ingredients. The food industry anticipates that retroactively proving the safety of ingredients that have been used for decades could impose a significant burden on companies that must comb through old records.  “It’s not like companies keep a GRAS drawer”.
