Proposed Mandatory GRAS Rule Coming in 2026
The US Food and Drug Administration has added a proposed rule to its spring 2026 agenda that requires the mandatory submission of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) notices for the use of human and animal food substances. Currently, companies achieve self-affirmed GRAS status and then voluntarily may send the research to the FDA, hoping to receive a “no questions” letter from the agency on the GRAS status.
